Links

Contained on this page is a collection of links to sites that I wanted to share. This could be because the site is owned by a friend of mine, or because the site in question has been helpful, but for whatever reason, each of the links below is worthy of a visit.

Friends

These are people that I'm lucky enough to count as my friends.

  • Altreus - The first half of the Hairy Bikers at Propeller.
  • Ghost Design Consultants - I work here… Nuff said!
  • Luke Armstrong - The other Hairy Biker from Propeller.
  • missangely - The life of Mari, a geeky Finnish chick that enjoys tea
  • Phil's Blog - The thoughts of the derptastic developer I met at Propeller.
  • The 14th - Rob Weller’s personal homepage – I’m not sure he knows what he wants to do with it, but as soon as I know, I’ll let you know.

My Other Sites

Here are some of the other sites that I've build under my own steam.

  • Daniel Hollands - A Web-based copy of my curriculum vitae and portfolio.
  • Fight Club Monkey - The home for gamers that don’t take themselves too seriously – a gaming clan that focuses more on having fun than winning the game.
  • Fix it with Science - Usability is something that every web designer and developer should take into account, Fix it with Science test and evaluate Web site by focusing on the concepts of Usability and Accessibility.

Resources

These are the sites that fall over themselves to provide up to date news, useful information, and/or tutorials.

  • Clients From Hell - A collection of stories about pain in the arse clients from professionals across the world – helps to remind you that no matter how bad you have it, someone has it worse.
  • Codrops - A web design and development blog that publishes articles and tutorials about the latest web trends, techniques and new possibilities.
  • WebAppers - Providing links to all the best open source resources available for Web Developers.

Tools

If I see further, it is by standing on the shoulders of these fantastic web development tools... or something like that.

  • BitBucket - Much like GitHub, but lets you host, manage, and share Git and Mercurial code with unlimited private repositories for free for up to 5 developers.
  • CakePHP - CakePHP is an MVC-based rapid development framework for PHP that provides an extensible architecture for developing, maintaining, and deploying applications.
  • Git - A free & open source, distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.
  • GitHub - A web-based hosting service for software development projects that use the aforementioned Git version control system.
  • HTML5 Boilerplate - HTML5 Boilerplate is the professional badass’s base HTML/CSS/JS template for a fast, robust and future-proof site.
  • TinyPNG - TinyPNG uses smart lossy compression techniques to reduce the file size of your PNG files. By selectively decreasing the number of colours in the image, fewer bytes are required to store the data. The effect is nearly invisible but it makes a very large d

Web Comics

I currently subscribe to over 60 web comics via my RSS reader, here are some of my favourite ones.

  • Extra Ordinary - A hand drawn comic series about Li, Jordan, and their cat Shoelace – it always brings a smile to my face.
  • Optipess - A word you’d maybe end up with if you combined the two words “optimism” and “pessimism”.
  • Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal - A geek comic at heart, but it nevertheless addresses a broad range of topics, such as love, relationships, economics, politics, religion, science, and philosophy.
  • Sinfest - Tatsuya Ishida’s fantastic series on human nature, sexuality, gender roles, addiction and religion.
  • VG Cats - Although not updated anywhere near as regularly as I would like, this is easily one of the best video game-based web comics in the Web.
  • xkcd - Stick-figure strip featuring humour about technology, science, mathematics and relationships.
